Mint Julep Recipe for your Derby Party

May 02, 2019

As the 145th Run for the Roses approaches, I hope you are spending it cheering around the TV with friends sipping a mint julep.

While I've been to Churchill Downs and Keeneland, I've never made it for the Derby.  Going to the Derby would be a dream!

It is the fastest two minutes in sports, but the fashion and the hats, oh the hats! are part of the fun.

The Old Forester Mint Julep Recipe

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • Sprigs of fresh mint
  • Crushed ice
  • Old Forester Straight Bourbon Whisky

Make a simple syrup by boiling sugar and water together for five minutes. Cool and place in a covered container with six or eight sprigs of fresh mint, then refrigerate overnight.

Make one julep at a time by filling a julep cup with crushed ice, adding one tablespoon mint syrup and two ounces of Old Forester Kentucky Whisky.

Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint. Recipe courtesy of the Kentucky Derby
